I created a unique staging of this version of the myth of Orpheus, occurring on a pair of original Pullman train carriages operating a circular route on an authentic 1930s railway. I made a scale model of the carriages including all the period details in order to better show the concept. The play is set in a station buffet and later in a provincial hotel. These locations are significant because the represent waiting and arrival – the structure of the play is such that is constantly implying and referring to a journey that never actually occurs. This theme of movement without actual progress as a metaphor for existence is a theme that I wished to explore and push to its fullest and most literal interpretation.
