Since their invention, amateur cameras have been used to document family life. Regardless of background, we have been compelled to capture the places weʼve been and the experiences weʼve had. The shaky footage of candle-blowing, lawn-watering, a new car, or a family vacation allows us to rediscover our lives, reach new conclusions about the way we live, and glimpse what is most intangible: time. In Us, we reexamine the familiar images of the “Happy Family,” common among home videos from generation to generation, to ask: What does a “Happy Family” look like?
