“Zuccotti Park” is a musical about the human side of economics.  Set at its namesake location in New York City during the Occupy protests of late 2011, the play dramatizes the experiences of a broad cross section of Americans whose lives were impacted by the current economic system. Using the real Zuccotti Park for reference, I created a simple versatile set comprising blocks of various sizes, painted to look like polished granite that could be configured in different ways. We also had a large number of cardboard signs, boxes and pieces of plastic sheet that were moved around and used in a variety of different ways, representing the Zuccotti Park Protest/settlement. I also created a projected sequence to create backdrops for some scenes and underscore some of the more dramatic moments of the piece. This show had three different runs, with variations to accommodate the different venues.
